“BCT is giving our children an opportunity that no one else has.”
BCT’s Oasis Program provides scholarships for our after-school musical theatre programs and summer workshops to children living in family shelters.
In the 2015-2016 school year:
13 children experiencing homelessness performed in 8 musical productions, took improvisation, acting, and singing classes, wrote two original musical plays, performed at a senior home, and sang at the Brooklyn Cyclones game.
For the 2016-2017 school year:
This summer, we gave 36 scholarships to children from family shelters. They sang for the Borough President at the International Day of Friendship, created their own musicals, took acting and singing classes, and recorded cast albums of our original shows. This fall and spring, nine children from the shelter will be cast in our musical productions. In addition to theatre classes, BCT provides these children with chaperoned transportation and snacks. Our team of volunteers also provide tutoring, homework help, and outdoor playtime. When children move out of the shelter, BCT continues to offer its programming for free to its OASIS graduates and helps them to find theatrical opportunities closer to their new homes.
